Paul Gallagher Biography

Paul Gallagher has been a fine art black and white photographer for over twenty years, dedicating his photography to Northern England and the Scottish Highlands and photographing mainly in medium and large format. More recently he has been applying this expertise to colour and digital photography.

He began his photographic career studying graphic design and photography at Southport College of Art, England where he gained a distinction in photography. This led him to work professionally in a commercial studio in Liverpool. Some years later, Paul was invited to return to teach photography part-time at Southport College. He has been awarded an Associateship by the Royal Photographic Society.

Recently, Paul traded the dark room for the use of digital print production. Paul’s techniques are very traditional in the field and he is regarded as an expert in the use of the 5x4 view camera and the zone system. After the negatives are hand processed by Paul, they are scanned to produce high quality digital files.

Paul is a regular keynote speaker to Photographic Societies throughout the UK regarding his work and techniques in both the use of large format equipment and fine art digital monochrome print production. Paul runs workshops in the field as well as the dark room and “light room". He has received several commissions from organisations such as the Environment Agency and the BBC and his work has been used for marketing by Epson, Ilford and Permajet.

Paul is an experienced workshop leader and tutor having previously worked for 'Light and Land' and also on his own account. Taking these experiences and a passion for teaching photography, Paul has now, with other leading photographers, founded a new company aspect2i , to provide a refreshing and new approach to photography workshops.

Paul has written extensively for photographic publications about his techniques, approach and the use of large format equipment and digital image production. Paul is the technical editor for Professional Image Maker Magazine. He also holds regular exhibitions of his work. His first book “Aspects of Expression” discussing the expressive monochrome image, commissioned by Argentum, was released in October 2008.

From the very beginning, Paul’s inspiration has been the great American master, Ansel Adams. “Paul Gallagher’s photographs capture the grandeur of the landscape with the clarity that you find in the work of his favourite photographer, Ansel Adams” - David Clark, Amateur Photographer magazine.
